In Praise of Pie

Venison, Red Wine and Cosy Vibes

There’s something about the changing seasons that calls for comfort food done properly. And nothing says autumn in the Cotswolds quite like a generously filled, golden-crusted pie.

At The Market Tavern in Bampton, we’ve officially entered pie season – and leading the charge is our Venison Bourguignon Pie. Rich, slow-cooked, and full of flavour, it’s the kind of dish that warms you through and makes you slow down to savour every bite.

What’s on the Plate?

Our Venison Bourguignon Pie is made with tender, locally sourced venison, cooked low and slow in a deep red wine sauce with aromatic herbs and vegetables. Encased in a crisp, buttery pastry and served with smooth creamed potatoes, seasonal greens, and plenty of glossy gravy – it’s hearty, indulgent, and proudly local.

Chef Stuart’s twist on the classic bourguignon brings together pub comfort and elevated flavour, perfect for those who want something special without the fuss.

The Perfect Autumn Dish in the Heart of West Oxfordshire

Whether you’re walking in from a brisk countryside stroll or settling in for a long lunch, our pie is best enjoyed fireside, paired with a glass of red or one of our real ales on draught from Hook Norton Brewery.

We believe in cooking with seasonal British ingredients, supporting local producers wherever possible, and creating dishes that reflect the time of year – and this pie fits the bill perfectly.

Looking for a proper Sunday lunch in Bampton, a midweek treat in the Cotswolds, or simply a pie worth leaving the house for? This one’s for you.
